第2季最大的变化来自于新来的一对姐弟比利和麦克斯。麦克斯这个假小子迅速和几个男孩成为了玩伴，而且还成为了达斯汀和卢卡斯的梦中情人。比利则是个不太好相处的家伙。马特·杜菲暗示道：“史蒂芬·金非常善于刻画一些人类反派。真实社会中的恶魔丝毫不逊于那些超自然恶魔，我们希望引入这样一个角色。”
之前外媒曾曝光过两个新角色的概述，与杜菲的描述正好吻合。之前的角色概述中来看，麦克斯是一个顽强自信的13岁假小子，无论外表、行为还是爱好都更像一个男孩，而不是女孩。她有一段复杂的身世背景，与自己的继兄关系不佳，这也使得她更谨慎保护自己的过去，也往往对周围的人持怀疑态度。她是一位滑板好手，喜欢滑着滑板走遍各地；比利是一个肌肉发达的17岁青年。他毛躁好斗，魅力超群，甚至有传闻称他曾在过去就读的学校里犯下凶案。比利喜欢撬走别人的女友，往往能在拼酒中胜出，还开着一辆帅气的黑色雪佛兰科迈罗。不过他周围的人，特别是那些比他年轻的人往往会观察到他的暴力倾向和变化无常、不可预测的本质。
当然，《怪奇物语》依然是《怪奇物语》，还是会有很多超自然的问题。表里世界的裂缝依然存在，实验室现在换由看起来和善的欧文斯博士管理。杜菲兄弟对于新一季中的怪物闭口不谈，但他们透露这一季会展现“不同类型的恐惧”。此外，第2季中达斯汀会找到一个蝌蚪一样的宠物。饰演者盖登·玛塔拉佐表示：“这是一个和我有着紧密联系的小生物，它显然并不来自这个星球或这个位面。”
影片聚焦英国著名的旅行作家布鲁斯·查特文，他因感染艾滋病于1989年去世，而他的多年好友赫尔佐格在如今仍用该片表达了怀念。 影片以极为私人的笔触描绘两人多年的知己之情，查特文怀着对真相的热情，走到了世界的各个角落，而赫尔佐格也上路，去探访查特文一直着迷的东西——游牧生活，“那些狂野的角色、奇怪的梦想者，关于人类存在的本质的远大概念”。
