清末年间，南浔“八牛”之一的丝商洪福齐儿女绕膝，虽元配早年病故，幸喜娶得一房经营船菜馆的姨太太温柔贤慧，门前“洪福齐天”金匾高悬。但一家和和美美的表相却也暗藏危机，由姨太太带来的遗腹子洪文禄并非亲生，福齐对他自然另眼相看，文禄心理自卑且刻毒，总想有一天以紫夺红，为此暗设陷阱。 洪家长子文光参加革命党，文禄暗中告官，使文光难逃横祸，进而更株连全家。其时又逢洪家女儿雯蔚与仆人金宝相爱并怀孕，文禄又假充好人助雯蔚与金宝私奔，趁机剪除了自己谋夺家产的最后障碍。然后文禄亲自动手谋害了避祸他乡的福齐，将洪家产业全部占为己有。文禄生母亲睹惨烈一幕，惊吓成疯。雯蔚与金宝私奔中失散，回到南浔发现巳家破人亡，更误会自己爱人金宝也参与其中，走投无路之际欲投河自尽，幸被渔夫彭海救起，为报恩与之成婚，育有一子，从此一富家小姐沦为贫穷船娘。然而，文禄发现雯蔚苟活在世还要赶尽杀绝，彭海为保护雯蔚母子舍生赴死。
一场洪灾让儿时玩伴澪和野江被冲散。澪被大阪料理名店天满一兆奄的老板娘收留，给予了澪温暖，也发现了澪极具料理天分。一场大火烧了店铺也葬送了老板的性命。澪和老板娘肩负着重振天满一兆奄之名，来到了江户。无意中被一家名为鹤屋的料理店老板发现，勾起了老板对已逝女儿的回忆，在发现澪颇具天分后，让澪在鹤屋帮起忙来。
但最初澪的料理并没有得到客人的喜欢，相反还惹怒了客人。使其料理之路步履维艰，在几次受挫和经由浪人小松原及永田医生的点拨和帮助后，澪悟出了大阪和江户饮食的差别，做出了改变。改良后的食物得到了肯定，但很快就被其它店铺模仿，于是澪开始思索真正属于自己的味道，鹤屋生意的兴隆让老牌名店嫉妒不已且暗中想要破坏；而另一方面，儿时玩伴野江也在江户，以自己的力量守护着澪······

此剧为京剧、昆曲文武老生传统戏之一，全剧通唱曲牌，亦文亦武，在别母、中箭、殉城等场次中，有繁难的身段表演及曲牌演唱。川剧、湘剧、桂剧、秦腔、同州梆子、河北梆子均有此剧目，徽剧名《别母乱箭》。
