本剧讲述了以牛老幺为代表的一群40岁上下的中生代棒棒在遭遇生存空间急剧萎缩的职业危机中所演绎的喜怒哀乐。并着力展现了棒棒牛老幺在人生转型，重塑自我的过程中，所凸显的乐观坚韧，敢想敢干的“棒棒精神”，而这种精神也正是当下社会转型，改革深化，实现中国梦的进程中每个人都应当具备的“精气神”。作品期望以一个“小人物”的摸爬滚打和一群“小人物”的喜怒哀乐，激励更多人在实现梦想的征途中积极拼搏，大胆创新。
