1948年3月，已经在东北站住了脚的解放军，在林彪的领导下，已经发展为近50万大军。毛泽东、周恩来、任弼时等离开西北来到河北与刘少奇、朱德等会合，并讨论了当时形势，毛、朱等及时把握战略决战时机，命令东北野战军南下北宁，强攻锦州，切断东北蒋军退华北的路。以彻底残灭东北国民党军卫立煌集团。林彪为了有把握，提出先打长春，以围点歼灭沈阳援敌。经过毛主席多次做工作，1948年7月，林彪决定按毛泽东意见办，南下攻击锦州。此期间，蒋介石对东北蒋军的撤、守，也犹豫不绝，出于政治利害考虑，终于没有下从东北全部撤至华北的决心。1948年9月12日，辽沈战役终于在毛泽东的坚持下打响了。10月14日，东野主力向锦州发起总攻，31个小时便克锦州。接着，长春宣告解放。未几，沈阳、营口亦相继解放。在东北野战军南下北宁线同时，华东野战军胜利举行了济南战役，中央军委决定发起淮海战役。
本剧时间设定在《星战前传：西斯的复仇》之后10年。黛博拉·周(《曼达洛人》)执导，制作也用到了《曼达洛人》著名的StageCraft技术，进行片场LED投屏景观拍摄。
