《东山学堂》是一部立足史实、关照现实的电视剧。在中国电视剧史上，是反映一代伟人毛泽东青少年时代成长历程的电视剧，肩负着里程碑式的探索意义和使命感。全剧通过描写毛泽东在东山学堂就学，结交新老师、新朋友，接受新式学堂教育，形成新的人生观和世界观，决心“以天下为己任”的过程，真实还原一代领袖如何由一个普通的农家孩子，成长成为一个胸怀大志、心忧天下的青年的过程，展现20世纪初期的时代风云，体现不同阶层的人群在历史洪流中的生命选择和生存状态。
